  7. Welcome to Dewdrops 2.1.  Please register this shareware as soon as you
  8. can afford to. There are no nag screens just this reminder in the readme
  9. file. Thousands have downloaded Dewdrops. So far only one has paid.

  13. Most of these graphics are my own work. The big exception is the lines
  14. which are all non-copyright material from the Web. Thank you to those
  15. who have put their good work on the Web.

  17. Once you have unzipped the file use File Manager in Windows and drag
  18. the Dewdrops directory and drop it into the directory of your Web
  19. Editor. This will make the Dewdrops gif files more accessible to
  20. your Web Editor.

  22. How To Use The Graphics
  23.  
  24. Most if not all Web editors have an insert graphic command. Use this to
  25. insert the graphics in the Web document.
  26.  
  27. Make sure that you copy the graphics across to the server.
  28.  
  29. Make sure that the directory specified in the Web document is the
  30. directory that the graphic is in ON THE SERVER. Put graphics in the same
  31. directory as the document and just insert them by their name without any
  32. path. So the code should read "something.gif" and the graphic should be
  33. in the same directory as "something.htm" - the Web document.

  35. Use small graphics to break up large slabs of text, as markers besides
  36. lists, as attention grabbing indicators when an important point is being
  37. made and for splashes of colour and visual relief. As a rule of thumb do
  38. not have more than 30K of graphics on a single page if you want it to
  39. load quickly on slow links. As many dewdrops are only 1-2K you can
  40. use them freely.

  42. How To Use Backgrounds.

  44. There should be 66 bacground gif files in a directory called backgrnd.
  45.  
  46. Insert the graphics using the BACKGROUND=*.GIF command where *.gif is
  47. the particular graphic you have selected. Most recent Web editors have a
  48. "background graphic" command. Do NOT confuse this with the BGCOLOUR
  49. (background colour) command which is quite different.

  51. Netscape will tile out these graphics so they fill the page. That is why
  52. they can be so small, these graphics are deliberately small so that they
  53. will load quickly and visitors to your home page will not be frustrated
  54. by the delay of a slow loading background.

  56. Use soft backgrounds e.g paperblu.gif for most purposes when normal
  57. sized text has to be read.
  58.  
  59. For attention grabbing frames use a startling background like shock.gif.
  60. If you use use a very strong background check your text colour and size
  61. carefully to ensure it is still readable.

  63. Always check that your background graphic and text and link colours are
  64. compatible.

  66. Backgrounds help set the atmosphere of your page. Use parchment.gif if
  67. you want a traditional feel. Use hints2.gif if you want a soft feel.
  68. Loveltr.gif is for romantics etc.
